Only 1 of every 600 Pit Bulls will find a home and live, the other 599 Pit Bulls will be euthanized in U.S. shelters. This number does not include the number of Pit Bulls that die from starvation, abuse, neglect, or fighting, or the number of Pit Bull mixes: this statistic strictly shows the number of purebred Pit Bulls that die in shelters in comparison to the number of purebred Pit Bulls that are adopted. Just because your Pit Bull is purebred, young, and friendly, this does not make your dog's chances any higher of being adopted. Do you still want to give up your Pit Bull knowing his/her chances of survival?
People give up pets for many reasons: living arrangements change, schedules change, spouse/partner/relationship status has changed, Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) prohibit Pit Bulls in certain cities, apartment complexes, etc., the birth of a child or change of job schedule leaves little time for a pet, and many other reasons. We get an average of 45 calls and e-mails per day from individuals who need to give up their Pit Bulls for the reasons above, and this number of calls/e-mails does NOT include the number of Pit Bulls that we are told are in shelters, humane societies, or abusive/neglectful situations. For this reason, we ask that if you do need assistance with placing your Pit Bull, then please read this page entirely and thoroughly. We have provided useful information, tips, and suggestions for those of you who need help placing a Pit Bull. Once you have read this page, please feel free to contact us directly so that we can discuss your Pit Bulls options.
Most animal rescues will not take Pit Bulls. Rescues have limited space and funds, and may not have available room to take your dog, however, this does not mean that rescues cannot help you place your Pit (continue reading to find out how we can help). Pit Prints Rescue is the ONLY state licensed Pit Bull rescue in the state of Georgia and there are only a handful of Pit Bull rescues across the U.S. Because of this, Pit Bull friendly rescues tend to stay full and have little spare room, and few openings. When Pit friendly rescues do have openings, there are generally waiting lists for dogs that are in need of help, so just because there is an opening does not mean your dog will get that opening: dogs are placed on these lists in the order that the rescues receive notice that the dogs need rescue, so there may be 10, 20, 30, or more dogs on the waiting list ahead of your dog.
Most U.S. shelters will not adopt Pit Bulls out (they do not have the experience, knowledge, staff, volunteers, or time to properly place this breed in suitable homes), so if a rescue is unable to take your dog, know that if you take your Pit Bull to a shelter, you are sentencing him/her to death. If you truly want to help your Pit Bull, please provide yourself with sufficient time to find a home for him/her, which could mean a few months or more. The BEST chance that your dog has of living and finding a great home is by staying with you until a new home can be found. If you can keep your Pit Bull with you until a home is found (either through our rescue, or through another rescue), you are guaranteed that your Pit Bull will live, and will have a wonderful home. We can help.
We ask that you give yourself at least several months to find your Pit Bull a home? PLEASE do not contact us for assistance with your Pit Bull if you have waited until the last minute to find placement for your Pit Bull. The chances that we can take your Pit Bull at the last minute are almost nonexistent. We have far too many Pit Bulls to help, and we will not condemn those dogs to death to save yours when you have not truly attempted to find placement for your Pit.
If we do not have available room in our rescue, but you do not want your dog to die in a shelter, you want to find him/her a loving home, and you are willing to keep the dog until a home is found, we will be happy to assist you by placing the dog on our websites, taking applications, and screening potential homes, just as we do with all of the dogs that we have in our rescue. We do not use foster homes (so, all of the dogs you see on our site are with us at our home), as we prefer to have our rescue dogs with us so that we can learn their personalities which helps us to properly match them up with the right families/individuals. As long as you can keep your Pit Bull with you, we will continue to work on finding a home for him/her until room is available in our rescue.
If you would like our assistance with placing your Pit Bull, please e-mail us with: pictures of your Pit ( at least four clear, good pictures of your Pit.). We will also need information on the dogs personality, temperament, and likes/dislikes, as well as veterinary information. You can read what type of information we request by reading a bio of any of our rescues on our Adopt-a-bull page . Once we receive your dog's information, we will contact you by e-mail to let you know your dog is on the site, and we will keep you updated on any possible homes that we come across.
In the event that our organization does have available room and no waiting list, please know that we do have criteria that the dogs must meet before being accepted into the rescue. Under no circumstances will we accept any dogs that have shown aggression towards humans: Pit Bulls are NOT human aggressive by nature, and for this reason, any Pit Bull that is aggressive towards humans should be euthanized. Do not contact our organization for help with placing your Pit Bull if he/she has ever shown signs of aggression towards people.
